BRD Oral Statement to the Committee on
Economic Social and Cultural Rights in OHCHR,
Geneva
On 3 May 2010, Mr. Khan Agha Dawoodzai, Director of Bureau for
Reconstruction and Development (BRD), has delivered an oral statement
to the Committee on Economic Social
and Cultural Rights (ESCR). Titled the “Status of Economic
Social and Cultural Rights (ESCR) in Afghanistan In Pre-Meeting of the
Committee
on ICESCR –OHCHR, Palais Wilson, Geneva”
presented in the eve of examining of the Afghan Government Report on
Economic Social and Cultural Rights.
BRD
in collaboration with the local CSOs advocacy networks, prepared a
comprehensive parallel report on the status of economic
social and
cultural rights
in Afghanistan, submitted to the committee on Economic

Affirming the Commitments for
Protection of Environment and Promotion of Sustainable Development at
the Local Level in Afghanistan
As post conflict country the local population are faced with money
environmental and sustainable development issues and challenges, which
requires a greater attention from the government, civil society,
politicians and international community, which at the same time need
for effective partnership and collaboration among the local government,
the civil society, elected members, local communities to promote the
agenda of safe environment and sustainable development
in Afghanistan.
In the event of Celebration of the Earth Day 2010, BRD in collaboration
with Earth Day Network in cooperation with the Governor Office and BRD
CSOs Advocacy Network s organized a one day seminar on the environment
and sustainable development issues in Punjsher Province of
Afghanistan., as a
basic toward affirming the commitments of all the
local government, Civil Society, Elected Members of the Provincial
Council and community
leaders for their effective involvement on the
environmental and sustainable development issues at the local level in
Afghanistan.

BRD’s Volunteering Team, Mr.
Khan Agha Dawoodzai and Ms. Wong Yin Mei, wins the United Nations
Volunteering
Team of the Year 2007 Award
On December 5th 2007, the United Nations Volunteers Online Volunteering
service announced the winners of the “Online Volunteering
Team of the Year Award”. A jury of experts in volunteerism,
development and online collaboration selected the winners of the Online
Volunteering Teams based on the volunteers’ commitment, the
organization’s approach towards online volunteer involvement,
the online collaboration and its impact
on the organizations’
development activities. BRD’s Volunteering Team (comprising
Mr. Khan Agha Dawoodzai and Ms. Wong Yin Mei) is pleased to win the

Launch
of BRD’s Management Training Center
BRD’s Training Unit will be launching a series of Management
Training – Monitoring & Evaluation, Project
Management, Leadership, Advocacy and Rights Based Approach to
Development. The training is suitable for staff of NGOs, UN Agencies,
the private sector and Government. Interested parties please request

51 Trainees of the Carpentry, Welding
and Tinsmith Course Graduates
The first batch of trainees from the Kandahar Vocational Training
Centre graduated from the Carpentry, Welding and Tinsmith course.
The trainees successfully completed the 6-month training course, which
includes theoretical and practical training. They received their
Certificates of Completion and a free set of toolkit so that they can
find employment or start their own private enterprise.
BRD
announces its partnership with
Play for Peace
BRD is proud to be the Partner of Play for Peace, a US based global
organization teaching children to live and play together. The Play for
Peace initiative in Afghanistan will be launched by BRD, with a new
program for youth and children. It focuses on capacity building of
youth and work with children through experiential learning to cultivate
a culture of peace in Afghanistan. - Nov 2007
Integration of Participatory Approach
in BRD’s Human Rights Program
As a follow up to the 28th International Human Rights Training Program
organized by Equitas in Montreal, Canada from 10-29 Jun 2007,
BRD’s Program Director held a 2-day internal session for
staff and trainers of BRD, on his return from the program.
The objective of the training is to extend the skills and knowledge
gained and integrates Participatory Training Methods such as Group
Dynamics, Conflict Management during Training Sessions, Building
Conciseness, Demonstration, Case Studies, Dialogue and Experiential
Learning into BRD’s Human Rights Education and Training

Basic Management Skills Training in
Daikundi and Bamyan Provinces
Under the auspice of UNAMA – Afghanistan Emergency Trust Fund
Program, BRD completed a Governance training project in Bamyan and
Daikundi Provinces.
70 officials of the local government from the district and provincial
levels were trained in Basic Management skills so as to improve their
department’s performance and provide better service.

Launch of National Training on Peace
Building and Conflict Resolution by Non-Violent Communication
BRD hosted the first 5-day National Non-Violent Communication (NVC)
Training in Afghanistan from August 12-16 2007. 30 participants from
Civil Society Organizations, NGOs, Government officials and UN Agencies
attended the training in Kabul. Expert peace trainers – Ms.
Verena Jegher from Basel Switzerland and Ms. Selene Aitken from Ashland
United States facilitated the training. Both are certified trainers
with the Center for Non-violent Communication. – August 2007
Management Skills Training to the
President’s Office and the Office of Administrative Affairs
BRD is the training provider of Asia Foundation for the Support to
Center of Government Project.
80 staff of the President’s Office and Office of the
Administrative Affairs was equipped with Modern Management, Time
Management, Building Successful Team and Basic Report writing skills.
The project started in July 2007 and will be completed in March 2008.

Building the Capacity of the staff of
the President’s Office and Office of the Administrative
Affairs in Communication Skills
The Communication Skills Training Program is a new program designed by
BRD with the support, encouragement and cooperation of Asia Foundation.
The training program aims to enhance participants’ knowledge
and skills in concepts of communication, understand barriers to
effective communication and overcoming strategies. 16 med-senior level
officials of the Office of the President and 20 officials from the
Office of Administrative Affairs attended the training. - March 2007
Vocational
Training Program in Kandahar
As part of BRD’s Capacity Building for Income Generation
Program, a Vocational Training Center (VTC) was established in
Kandahar, in addition to the VTC established in District 8 of Kabul
City in August 2006. Both VTCs were funded by the Canadian Embassy in
Afghanistan.
The goal of the program is to equip trainees with the skills that are
in demand to improve their opportunities for employment in the
developing market economy. The first training programme was Carpentry,
Welding and Tinsmith, started on 15 January 2007. – Jan 2007
Vocational Training to Create Job
Opportunities and Self Sufficiency in Kabul City
BRD established a Vocational Training Center (VTC) in District 8 of
Kabul City in August 2006. The first course conducted is a Welding,
Carpentry and Tinsmith training program for 60 poor and unskilled
Afghans. The project is sponsored by the Canadian International
Development Agency/Canadian Embassy in Afghanistan. – August 2006
Building Information Management
Capabilities at Kapisa Province
The project is a joint initiative between BRD, United Nations
Assistance Mission for Afghanistan, Provincial Reconstruction Team
Bagram, Afghanistan Information Management Services and the Office of
the Governor of Kapisa. The aim is to improve the staff’s
information management skills, thereby enabling them to more
effectively plan, coordinate, monitor and analyse development and
reconstruction activities in the province. – August 2006
2004 United Nations Volunteer of the
Year is given to BRD’s Volunteer, Ms. Claire Suzanne Holland
BRD is pleased to announce that its volunteer – Ms. Claire
Suzanne Holland has been awarded the United Nations Volunteer of the
Year 2004. Claire contributed her professional expertise in law,
training and organizational consulting. – Dec
