KEY PROGRAM: DEVELOPMENT OF VIABLE CIVIL SOCIETY

Along with the Government and private sector, civil society is an important and legitimate actor in peace-building and democratization. Strong civil-society institutions, interacting with the state, can create innovative solutions to complex social and economic problems. A vibrant and diverse civil society can also provide an atmosphere of accessibility so that poor and marginalized people are able to participate in their own social, economic, cultural, and political development. To promote democracy and as part of the nation building process, it is necessary to support the building and strengthening of civil society organizations at the grass roots level.

BRD believes that civil society has to be educated and trained to function effectively. Their awareness of their role in peace building and the promotion and protection of human rights has to be raised. Their skills and knowledge to implement development projects have to be enhanced.

Capacity Building of Civil Society in Peace Building and Conflict Resolution

In order to sensitize Civil Society Organizations to their role in peace building and conflict resolution, it is important to enhance their skills and knowledge of effective conflict resolution and management.

BRD seeks to enhance the capacity of Civil Society Organizations through training on peace building, human rights and conflict resolution. Such courses include:

      Conflict Management
       Non-violence Communication
       Civic Education
       Peace Training
Training of Teachers in Education Process
       Rule of Law Training

National Training on Peace Building and Conflict Resolution by Non-Violent Communication

Civil Society Organizations participated in a 5-day National Non-Violent Communication Training, facilitated by certified trainers with the Center for Non-violent Communication. Participants learnt how to mediate disputes and conflicts at all levels, communicate effectively, build relationships and teach and promote peace.

The objectives were to cultivate a culture of peace and transfer skills and knowledge from international peace building expert trainers to local organizations and individuals. The participants were staff of NGOs and CSOs working on communal harmony/conflict resolution/peace building; managers in the development sector and trainers of peace building and conflict resolution.

“What the trainers taught us was really useful; there’s a lot of need for this in Afghanistan… I’d like to start by using this in my own house and my own office.”
 - Participant.

“Before this training I had difficulty forgiving some things that had happened in my past. I feel that I am now able to forgive some people that I haven’t been able to forgive before because now I can understand their needs.”
 - Participant who was the head of the Department of Women’s Affairs, Afghanistan

Peace Building and Conflict Resolution by Non-Violent Communication for Children

BRD and TEMBA School hosted more than 40 children for a day of learning non-violent communication through making art.

The local children are aged 8-13 and came from all walks of life. They comprise school kids, deaf children and street children.

During the class, the children showed that they understood and valued concepts such as empathy, respect, love, kindness, giving, appreciation, happiness and creativity.

The children sang and made art together.

Those who are not deaf enjoyed learning and expressing sign language for “Love”.

At the end of the day, the classroom was filled with children’s smiling faces.

Capacity Building of Civil Society Organizations in Human Rights Advocacy

To build the capacity of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in human rights advocacy, BRD has developed a program that encompasses training and the establishment of a network for human rights promotion and advocacy in Afghanistan.

The program seeks to raise civil society’s awareness of their role in building a democratic society, their strength in numbers and their influence in the spread of human rights in the community.

The intervention aims to promote human rights and its advocacy by:

Enhancing the capacity of local CSOs in human rights advocacy through education and
          training

Training a pool of CSO human rights trainers, who in turn disseminate the knowledge in
          their organizations and community

Strengthening the inter-linkages and formalizing/building partnerships between CSOs
active in human rights promotion, enabling them to collaborate in development, share
         experiences and knowledge and

Raising awareness about human rights protection and its significance for democracy and
          citizen empowerment.
